How to Make French Press Coffee

One of the most forgiving and satisfying methods. Full body, rich texture, and almost no technique required once you have the basics.

Why French Press Works Well

It’s full immersion: the coffee steeps completely in the water, then is separated by a metal filter. This lets more oils and fine particles through than paper filters, producing a heavier, more textured cup. It’s also very consistent once you dial in the ratio and grind.

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat water to just off boil.
  2. Grind coffee coarsely and add to the French press.
  3. Pour all the water in, making sure to wet all the grounds. Give a gentle stir.
  4. Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up. Steep for 4 minutes.
  5. Press the plunger down slowly and evenly.
  6. Serve immediately. Don’t let it sit on the grounds or it will continue extracting and become bitter.
