How to Store Coffee Beans

Best way to store coffee beans for freshness. Avoid the fridge and freezer myths. Practical tips for home use.

Coffee is best when fresh. Here’s how to keep it that way without overcomplicating things.

The Basics

  • Keep beans whole until just before brewing
  • Store in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture
  • Room temperature is fine for beans you’ll use within 2–4 weeks
  • Buy smaller amounts more often rather than large bulk bags

What About the Fridge or Freezer?

For everyday use, the fridge is usually a bad idea (moisture and odors). Freezing can work for longer-term storage if done carefully (airtight, portioned, no thawing and refreezing), but for most people it’s unnecessary if you buy fresh and use beans within a few weeks.

Practical Recommendation

An opaque airtight container in a cool cupboard is enough for the majority of home brewers. Focus more on buying fresher beans and grinding just before brewing.
