How to Make Better Coffee at Home
You don’t need expensive gear or barista skills. Focus on these five things and your coffee will improve dramatically.
1. Start with fresher beans
Coffee is best within a few weeks of the roast date (not the “best by” date). Buy smaller bags more often. Look for a roast date on the bag. Whole beans stay fresher longer than pre-ground.
2. Grind right before you brew
This is the single highest-impact upgrade for most people. A basic burr grinder produces more even particles than a blade grinder, leading to better extraction and flavor. See How to Choose a Coffee Grinder.
3. Use a scale and a consistent ratio
Volume measurements (tablespoons) vary wildly. Weighing coffee and water is the fastest path to repeatable results. Start around 1:16 and adjust to taste. Use the Ratio Calculator.
4. Water quality and temperature
If your tap water tastes bad, your coffee will too. Filtered water is usually enough. Aim for water just off the boil (around 195–205°F / 90–96°C) for most methods.
5. Don’t overcomplicate the rest
Fancy accessories are fun, but they matter less than the four points above. Get the fundamentals solid first, then experiment.
